Vaud is the most populous canton of French-speaking Switzerland and is divided into two premium regions: Lausanne with its agglomeration, and the remaining areas from the shores of Lake Geneva through the Broye to the Vaud Jura. With the CHUV university hospital in Lausanne, the canton has one of Switzerland’s five university hospitals. Its premium level is structurally among the highest in the country — so model choice and an annual comparison have a correspondingly strong effect here.

Frequently asked questions — health insurance in the canton of Vaud

How many premium regions does the canton of Vaud have?▼
Vaud is divided into two premium regions: region 1 covers Lausanne and its agglomeration, region 2 the remaining municipalities. The same insurer with the same model therefore costs a different amount on Lake Geneva than, say, in the Broye — what counts is the premium region of your municipality.
Is there a special premium subsidy in the canton of Vaud?▼
Yes. In addition to the ordinary premium subsidy, Vaud has a cantonal cap: a household’s premium burden should not exceed ten percent of its reference income. The claim is made with the canton — check your eligibility, especially with middle incomes.
Until when can I switch health insurer in the canton of Vaud?▼
Your cancellation of basic insurance must reach your current insurer by 30 November; the switch takes effect on 1 January. The insurance year ends on 31 December. Given Vaud’s high premium level, the annual comparison pays off particularly here.
